Another Metal Podcast Episode 15

Jul 11

This one starts with thrash and death, gets a little blackened, and eventually finds where the stash was hidden. In following a bit of a trend, I’ve discovered that when I end the show with something a bit ‘off’ there’s a 9-in-10 chance it came from either Portland or Finland. Someone may want to look into that.

Shy Kennedy, vocalist for Pittsburgh doom and stoner metal group Horehound, was awesome enough to take the time recently for a few questions about the band, the power of the riff, and the hometown scene.

The heavy metal podcast your friends (and you) have never heard of continues with episode 13. This is perhaps one of the ‘harshest’ episodes since, now that I think of it, only two of the twelve tracks feature any clean vocals at all; but then again this is metal so just try not throwing up some devil horns to each and every song.

And here we have episode 12 of our modest little heavy metal podcast, on time with the new weekly schedule no less. Kicking things off is Sludgehammer from Toronto with some great death/thrash/groove loudness and from there descend into an interesting mix of metal from Sweden, Germany, Poland, France, and Indonesia.

Episode 11 just so happens to be the first installment of the show after switching to a weekly schedule. That essentially means double the new heavy metal every month and we can all agree that’s a good thing. Another good thing is the fact that this episode features killer bands from Finland, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Estonia, Australia, and the US. You could say this show ‘gets around’, if you know what I mean.

An interview and track stream with Toronto based death/thrash/groove metal band Sludgehammer ahead of the release of their debut LP, ‘The Fallen Sun’. It’s pretty killer, if you ask us.

This episode just might be the most diverse so far, and it really is all over the place; there’s extreme metal from Ukraine, visual kei-inspired metal from Germany, Christian deathcore from the US, and old-school doom from Quebec.

Review: Vainaja – Verenvalaja

There are good reasons Finland’s Vainaja made it onto this site’s end-year list for 2014 with their debut album, Kadotetut. Now, the mysterious trio are once again cloaking themselves in a mist of meta-fictional folklore and offering an outing of cult-flavored metal in the shape of Verenvalaja, a solid if not especially forward moving album of engaging death and doom.

Here we are at episode 8 of our regular heavy metal podcast, and it’s quite a well-rounded one. We start it off fairly light in the first set, get a little blackened and nasty in the second, and finish off with a thrashy third. Countries represented this time around include Russia, Italy, Greece, Spain, Canada, Chile, US, and Arkansas (not technically its own country, but come on…).

Review: Novembre – URSA

After a nine-year hiatus, Italy’s masters of melancholy are back with a new album. The wait was long, but thankfully there’s no rust to be found here, Novembre’s URSA is a beautiful work of melodic and progressive doom metal.
